Peter Garrett has been an Australian icon for the last 30 years. While he started his rise to fame in the rock band Midnight Oil, he has recently become the environmental face of the Australian Labour Party. While these two roles may seem lifetimes (and worlds apart), Peter’s move into politics can be viewed simply as a maturing of his passionate ideals. While always being at the forefront of environmental and indigenous activism he has now positioned himself in a place where he can be more influential. Along with this maturing has come a family and a more relaxed approach to life. Peter now enjoys just reading and listening to CD’s…not surprising considering how hectic it must be being the only male in a house of four females. Because of these combination of things along with his jet setting work life, it was fitting that this be a holiday house.

Queensland was the only real option as far as site plans go due to Peter’s self confessed love of surfing, the great outdoors, and the Northern end of Australia. The house is designed to bring the outside in and vice-versa with only the basic areas being inside and plenty of outdoor areas for entertaining or just relaxing.

With 3 teenage girls it was important that these spaces be separate enough to allow each person their space but not segregated and isolating from the rest of the family. With this in mind, the upstairs area is a dedicated space just for Peter’s daughters where they can do their own thing while still being connected to the downstairs decking. It was important that the girls had this area as, as they get older chances are that they will bring friends and (eventually) partners on holiday with them…and nobody’s idea of a holiday is living in their parents pockets.
